Pellet Stove Troubleshooting

If your pellet stove will not start, keeps going out, burns dirty, or is not producing enough heat, start with the checks below. Always follow your stove manufacturer’s manual and shut the stove down before cleaning or servicing it.

Stove Will Not Ignite

Stove Starts but Goes Out

Weak Flame or Low Heat

Large, Lazy or Smoky Flame

A tall orange flame, black soot, or dirty glass often points to poor airflow or too much fuel. Clean the burn pot and venting, check the combustion blower, and make sure the air intake is clear.

Excessive Ash or Clinkers

Some ash is normal. Heavy ash, hard clinkers, or frequent burn-pot buildup can come from fuel quality, restricted airflow, incorrect settings, or a stove that needs a deeper cleaning.

Auger Is Not Feeding Pellets

Smoke or Odor in the Room

Shut the stove down if smoke is entering the room. Check the vent pipe, cleanout caps, gaskets, and exhaust connections. Persistent smoke, a strong electrical smell, or a suspected vent leak should be handled by a qualified pellet-stove technician.

When to Call a Professional

Stop troubleshooting and call a qualified technician for electrical problems, failed motors or blowers, repeated safety-switch faults, smoke leakage, damaged venting, cracked components, or any problem you are not comfortable servicing.
